"Brian is a flexible, kind teacher who always puts the student first. Piano lessons were a chore before I had Brian as a teacher but now I look forward to my lessons!" -Piano Student |
"Brian combines expert musicianship with an amazing ability to teach. I feel very lucky to have him as my teacher." |
Aside from this site, I rely solely on word-of-mouth referrals. I teach about 40 students per week and have maintained a lengthy waitlist for many years. There are many guitar and piano teachers offering lessons in Austin. I think what sets me apart is that not only was I a touring professional (several years of international touring and recording) but I am also a trained and successful teacher - and I love teaching! I really pride myself on my ability to teach people to be confident and competent musicians. I have a master's degree in music and human learning and am certified to teach K-12 music in Texas public schools. I also teach pedal steel, banjo, and mandolin.
My student-centered approach has proven to be very successful. One of my students took lessons from another teacher in Austin for a year, and he told me that he learned more from me in one lesson than he did in a year with his other teacher. Another former student now performs regularly at premier venues such as the Cactus Cafe and Antone's. I helped prepare one of my piano students for college auditions and he was accepted into the UT-Austin Butler School of Music. Recently, a long-time guitar and songwriting student won first prize in three categories at the Austin Songwriter's Group contest. I have many other student and parent references available on request.
All lessons are taught from my home studio near the scenic Bull Creek greenbelt in NW Hills. My home studio (pictured below) was built in 2011 with the specific intent of providing a comfortable place to teach music.
